About Me

Welcome to Everything Careers!

My name is Monira Ahmed, and this is my personal careers blog.  For nearly 20 years, I’ve had an amazing career in the UK higher education sector, supporting students and graduates with their employability through a range of diverse and exciting roles.

Currently, I’m a Careers Adviser for the University of Birmingham Careers Network Team, based in the College of Arts and Law.

Prior to this, I was a Careers Adviser at the University of Central Lancashire, and previously a Project Manager at the University of Liverpool Careers & Employability Service. I successfully managed and delivered innovative and award-winning employability and mentoring projects, provided careers advice, support and training, and established effective partnerships with hundreds of employers, including some of the UK’s most high profile firms and global businesses, to further the diversity and equality agenda.

It sounds like a cliche, but when I was at university, the one thing I was certain about was that I wanted to make a difference to people’s lives and have a “rewarding” career. In fact, listening to a fascinating lecture by a journalist on racial inequality and religious discrimination in the UK gave me the inspiration to help others overcome barriers and realise their potential.

However, it wasn’t all plain sailing to begin with; after I graduated, I was floating from job to job with very little prospects. But in 2002, after taking part in a Merseyside based graduate employability programme,  I got my lucky break – a job in higher education promoting diversity and supporting students’ career prospects.

One thing I’ve learnt is that when one door closes, there is most definitely something better on the horizon. Never give up and keep trying. I’ve had a truly rewarding professional journey, and it all began with that inspiring journalist!

This blog is a platform for me to share personal journeys and inspirations, careers advice, reflections and much more. My way of combining my passion for writing and careers work. Whoever you are – a student or graduate looking for some tips, a fellow careers professional or just someone with an interest in the world of work, I hope you enjoy reading. All views are my own.

I would love to hear from you, so please do connect with me on LinkedIn or Twitter
